French Bulldog Calculators

The French Bulldog is currently one of the most popular breeds in the UK and US, prized for their bat ears, compact body, and affectionate personality. Despite their name, they were developed primarily in England before being refined in France. They are excellent apartment dogs due to their low exercise requirements and quiet nature.

French Bulldogs are small dogs, typically weighing 8–13 kg. Their compact, muscular build and brachycephalic (flat-faced) anatomy defines both their appearance and their significant health challenges. Life expectancy is typically 10–12 years, though respiratory and orthopaedic issues often reduce quality of life earlier.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)

BOAS is the defining health challenge of the French Bulldog. The flat face creates narrowed nostrils, an elongated soft palate, and a narrow trachea — all of which restrict airflow. Signs include loud snoring, exercise intolerance, reverse sneezing, and cyanosis (blue gums) during exertion. Severely affected dogs require surgical correction. Heat is extremely dangerous — French Bulldogs can overheat and die within minutes in warm temperatures.

Weight Is Critical for Breathing

Every gram of excess weight increases the work required for an already compromised airway. French Bulldogs should be kept at the lean end of healthy BCS (4/9). Spinal and Skin Issues

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and hemivertebrae (malformed vertebrae) are common due to their screw-tail genetics. Skin fold dermatitis in facial and tail folds requires regular cleaning. Cherry eye, corneal ulcers, and allergies are also frequently seen.
